Waiting for Hassan
A massive explosion shook the company's Baghdad office 30 minutes ago.  Apparently there was a bomb at the Al Arabia TV office on the other side of Al- Rahman Mosque, on Hunting Club Road.  This is less than a kilometer from the office, on a major road that we travel frequently.

News reports on Al Arabiya say it was a carbomb, and that the car pulled up and then detonated immediately.  We're still trying to make sense of this, as that area is extremely secure and normally blocks all vehicular traffic from getting close enough to do a lot of damage.

No one at my office was hurt, although a window was blown out.  However, one my engineers, Hassan, was at the Arabiya office when it happened.  They are a customer.  We are awaiting word.  Ammar and Imad are there now, trying to get in or find out more.

And so again, we wait.

Update: reports say the bomb was small.  There are no deaths reported, and the wounded went to the hospital still able to walk.  That means mostly shrapnel and glass wounds, al hamdu lillah.

Update, 2004.10.30 14:35 GMT: There are now 7 reported dead. Two are positively identified as women, the other five are unknown. Still no word on Hassan.

Update, 2004.10.30 15:30 GMT: It seems my earlier report was dead wrong - this was a big bomb. 31 cars are now known to be destroyed in the immediate area, and the number of dead is expected to be very high. Marwan is there now, and says there are "bodies all over". He cannot get past the US soldiers, and no one is providing more information. The dead and wounded are being taken to Yarmuk hospital, and we'll most probably send someone there next.

Wow. One could say a lot about all these entries but...
In summation:
I hope everything turns out fine. Good luck with your new office, and I hope your coworkers at the Baghdad office receive no trouble.

Since Tyler's no doubt quite busy at the moment, I don't think he'd mind if I mentioned he accepts all friendings. You are welcome to read. :)

Fingers crossed, Daumen gedrückt, and inshallah he made it through.

Al-Arabiya? Why the hell did they VBIED an Arabic news satation??? Not that any of it is good, but what did they think they would accomplish with this??? Like it was helpful to their cause???

I was thinking the same thing myself. Al-Arabiya is one of those news orgs that has been on the bad side of Allawi, so why them? If this was really their intended target, it was a stupid, stupid idea.

...why anyone, though? or "Why not them?"

My thoughts for the people there and for Hassan's family, friends, and co-workers. I hope he makes it out ok, Tyler.

Just found this article...

-------------------------

A militant group claimed on Saturday responsibility for a car bomb attack on Al-Arabiya news channel's office building in Baghdad, the group said in a statement.

The statement identified the movement as "1920 Brigades," which also claimed to have kidnapped a Sudanese translator working with a US company.

It said that the group was acting for the sake of the God to bring down the office building used by the "treacherous network," referring to a powerful explosion which killed seven people working with Al-Arabiya.

The facade of the building was deformed and around 30 vehicles were damaged in the blast, which took place around 15:10 pm (1210GMT) in Mansour neighborhood in western Baghdad.

It was the first time that a popular Arabic-language media organization was targeted in car bombings, favored by insurgents towage attacks against US forces in Iraq and their collaborators. Based in Dubai and a sister news channel of the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabiya has broadcast purported videos and statements from militant groups, and from former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network. Al-Arabiya had been temporarily banned by the Iraqi authority from covering news in Iraq.

However, the Saudi-funded channel has been more cooperative with the interim government led by Iyad Allawi, especially since he visited Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

This doesn't surprise me, now that I read it. If you're embedded with the Coalition, you're a target. If you're embedded with the insurrection, you're a target. The only good choice, apparently, is not to report on Iraq at all. Sad.

A while ago you mentioned your house and your 10 guards. Are you living inside the Green Zone? If the green zone is becoming less secure I'm wondering if this means your house is becoming less secure by implication or whether it's already outside and, presumably, away from the folks trying to set off bombs in the green zone.

I'm also wondering whether the forensics guys might be getting orders to be less interested in determining the nature of the explosive used, since any indication that it came from Al Qaqaa could be a pretty bad thing.

Stay safe.

They used to live in the Mansour district, where the explosion took place--not in the Green Zone. They just moved to Arbil, where the company has opened a new office, so they're not in Baghdad at all anymore. But his company still has the Baghdad office.
